book clubbin

on april 12, 2008 i hosted my first ever book club. we read into the wild. everyone met at my tiny old apartment off wyoming.

my favorite reply to the invite was “ok yes i am interested in drinking wine, sitting around and trying to remember that we are supposed to be talking about a book and not gossiping! ”

even at our very first meeting not everyone read the book.

jill watched the movie. as we discussed the happenings of the book, she kept chiming in that it wasn’t how it happened in the movie. and we kept reminding her that this was BOOK club 🙂

since then the book club has grown and shrunk and grown again. it has been held in many homes. it even took a few hiatus, but with others help, the beast is alive and well!

tonight we meet to discuss freedom by jonathan franzen at our newest member’s place on the westside. i didn’t think i would be here for this one, so i am pretty excited.

times like this make me feel like i am on borrowed kc time, therefore making them 7x cooler than usual. and book club is always pretty cool.

in the happiness project GR talks about connections with people and creating groups of like-minded friends. how good for the soul it is. and i couldn’t agree more. at the time that i started my book club i was going to therapy and as challenge to myself, to be the person i wanted to be, i decided to start a book club. it is one of my great accomplishments. and one of the things i will miss most.

and then i will start an arkansas chapter. i have no doubt that there are ladies there that like to read, talk, eat cheese and drink too much wine. i all ready KNOW of a few. and others will be brought and some will come once and some will become the thread that holds it all together.

oh and in case anyone was wondering dusty, jill and i are the three left from the first email.

in no particular order here are the books we have chosen (that i can remember, feel free to help me out)

  • into the wild
  • if i am missing or dead
  • the beauty myth  (READ: this book is more boring than a women’s studies text-book. NO ONE read it and it almost killed book club. you have been warned)
  • water for elephants
  •  a walk in the woods
  • this is were i leave you
  • then we came to the end
  • her fearful symmetry
  • almost moon
  • room
  • the girl with the dragon tattoo
  • the girl who played with fire
  • are you there god? it’s me margaret
  • assassination vacation
  • sharp objects
  • freedom

  1. don’t forget…
    – My Horizontal Live.. (That made for interesting conversations!)
    – The Alchemist
    – Eat, Pray, Love
    and..
    – Blink (yawn…..)
I believe that is 20 books total!

And you will never NOT be a part of the KC books & booze group! You are our founder.. our leader.. our inspiration! and we will hunt you down and skype you in every chance we get! If we don’t just have book club on occasion in AR!

  2. I’m so glad that you started the club! Book clubs come and go, but this one is super special – you did good, lady! Great books, great food, great friends.
