{get crafty} week 3- jewelry box makeover

so in the craft room i have a drawer full of random crap to paint on. bowl, plates, ceramic boxes that my grandma always gives me for christmas and lots of other random crap. this drawer comes in handy when you want to make something but don’t know what or you just want an unusual “canvas” to get your art on.

while the husband and i are busy doing the grunt work for some art i have in my mind, i decided to turn to the trusty drawer for this week’s creation.

meet my old jewlery box. i have no idea how long i have had it. i am pretty sure it is from ikea which means i have had it for somewhere around twenty years. i haven’t used it for a long time, but always wanted to do something with it. so, i gave it a makeover.

so first, i took off the knob on top and the knob feet. then i sanded the top of the box. sanding is a new thing for me. i don’t usually do it and then i wish i would have. see, i am learning. once it was sanded, i wiped it off and got my paint on. i selected four colors for the dots to start with and planned on making the centers yellow. once i got all four colors on the top, i added a fifth. after i made all the dots, i decided to put spread the color out a little more and use the same five colors as centers. then i added the yellow on top.i let the paint dry and then put on a coat of clear polyurethane.

next, i measured the trays inside the box and cut tissue paper to fit-yes i do save most of the colored/patterned tissue paper i receive in gifts- brushed a little mod podge in and pressed the paper down. again, i didn’t try to be super neat about it. i just can’t do super neat and i don’t really love how it looks. i did the same thing for the other tray.

i also painted the knob for the lid. i decided not to put the bottom knobs back on. they annoy me. eventually i would like to replace the top knob with something less…boring? predictable? knobish? i dunno, but something else.
