i want to love things like this, but it just doesn’t work in our house. eventually we plan to get a new sofa and put the one we have now and the futon downstairs, but until then i have a dark stained wood futon, with a cover that can be changed. and the most comfortable ethan allan couch, with a almost cream and beige chevron pattern, with some darker green and red woven in.
so that color pallet just won’t do.
this looks a lot more like something you would work for our current furniture situation. a lot of people have really great things to say about this color in rooms with lots of natural light. they also say that is plays nicer with bold colors in decor that one might think.
b hates the idea of accent walls, but i think that when done correctly, they can accomplish what you are looking for. and maybe, in our case, this could be a great idea. check these out.
accent wall with wall paper? mama like.
i am not used to decorating a house like ours. it has talllllll ceilings, big uncovered windows with the woods all around, with natural light pouring in most of the day. but no natural wood in the house. this is really throwing me for a loop. it also makes me want to fill my house with antiques, which isn’t impossible, but b may not agree.
maybe we should paint the whole thing in different shades of gray. maybe we should leave it all white.
that looks pretty nice to me.
the other hard thing is having furniture that may or may not be changing any time soon. and the floors. country tile in the kitchen. weird beigey/blue carpet. and lets not forget the awesome pink carpet. we don’t know when these things will be changing either.
let’s also keep in mind how open the house is and the fact that you can most of the house from each room.
check out this sweet wallpaper. i should dislike this a lot more than i do.
i just don’t know what to do! so, i am asking you…what do you think? ever had any luck with a certain color in this situation or seen something you have really liked? as always, i am looking for your suggestions here!

I think you missed your calling in life. I think you would be a fantastic interior designer, decorator, etc. You have such interesting and unique ideas…I am glad you have a big new space to express yourself in…Miss you…
thanks lisey! miss you too
In a previous life, I owned a house that had hard-wood floors in the living room and dining room, which were just one big open space, really. Two walls were broken up by windows. We painted three walls an orange/red color and left the longest wall, which went into the kitchen from that room, white. I LOVED LOVED LOVED that room. Our bedroom in this house, which was my second favorite spot, had a light olive paint on the walls. Our furniture in the bedroom was a mish-mash of stuff, from a silver bed frame, to light wooded night stands. I’m a big fan of color on my walls, though, and generally don’t care a whole lot about matching, as long as it’s not hard on the eyes. Our furniture tends to be more blandish, though, I guess, with accent pillows or interesting lamps to draw things together.
Although I do like a lot of the wallpapers out there, it seems harder to put up yourself and also more permanent, but that could be a mental thing on my part.
Justin and I are big fans accent walls. Our living room has a long dark navy blue wall, our bedroom has different shades of brown tones on different walls, we have a white accent wall in the basement…they can really add some dimension to a room. I loved the wallpaper looks you posted. From the sound of it though- you may be on the right path with the grays/neutrals all over for the time being until you’re ready to change out the carpet/furniture and do a total overhaul on each room. I’m sure you can bring in plenty of color with accent pieces like artwork/small furniture/pillows/rugs/etc.
I Love the idea of accent walls with wallpaper over doing it with paint. but i also like accent stripe(s) done with paint. I’ve done both and have loved them both. And i plan on doing an accent wall with wallpaper again.
